Key achievements in 2007-08

  • Our members contributed to a safer Australia by rescuing 13,642* people and preventing 446,929” other rescues, while spending 1,112,205 hours of volunteer patrols watching over more than 55 million visitations to Australia’s favourite playground – the beach.
  • Our members contributed to a smarter Australia by obtaining more than 90,000 awards and qualifications.
  • Our members contributed to a healthier Australia by participating in a range of surf sports activities and events around the country.
  • Our members contributed to a vibrant and growing community-based organisation, with an overall increase in membership of 10,000, or 8%, and big increases in key categories such as active patrolling surf lifesavers and junior surf lifesavers (or ‘nippers’).

    At Surf Life Saving Australia, we:

  • Improved our intelligence gathering and reporting processes to help identify drowning ‘black spots’.
  • Conducted the inaugural Beach Safety and the Law Summit to help identify legal impediments to improved coastal safety.
  • Developed our first-ever ‘road-map’ for smarter, lifesaving information, communication and technology (ICT) systems.
  • Distributed $7,371,608 to states, clubs and branches for ‘frontline’ water safety services.
  • Delivered a full season of high quality surf sports events, which attracted increased TV ratings.
  • Finished the Year of the Surf Lifesaver - the most successful branding campaign ever conducted by the movement – on a high note.
  • Successfully competed our five year registered training organisation (RTO) audit to allow us to continue to provide educational qualifications.
  • Formed partnerships with government, other bodies and ‘beacon’ clubs to develop sustainable environmental practices for the whole movement.
  • Improved internal processes to ensure more effective reporting of how we met our objectives.
  • Began the long process of administrative improvement to ensure SLSA Ltd delivers effectively for our internal and external stakeholders into the future.
