The National Surf and Kayak Talent Program Gold Coast Pilot is well underway.
There were 22 athletes taken into the initial squad, with 13 of them competing at kayak national championships. Athletes were primarily coached by their surf club coach as well as enjoying opportunities to train at the AIS facility.
This winter athletes will be undertaking strong kayak training. This will give them the opportunity to accelerate their ski paddling come summer, as well as open up the opportunity to progress in the Olympic sport of kayaking.
Key elements of the National Surf and Kayak Talent Program include the ability to mix surf and kayak. Athletes must maintain their basic surf lifesaving club commitments (proficiency and patrols) in order to qualify. Their training takes into consideration the dual demands of surf and kayak competitions and encourages talented paddlers to make the most of the Olympic opportunity that kayaking represents.
The National Surf and Kayak Talent Program is developing paddling resources that everyone can access. If you would like a copy of the Team Boat Workshop DVD, or the Competition Preparation DVD, or a copy of the notes from the seminar, or any other information relating to the NSKP please contact NSKP Coordinator Lynda Lehmann.
